Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst device operation involves utilizing SCR-catalyst (3), which is suitable to store a chemical reducing agent partly and to reduce nitrogen oxide of exhaust gas (11) of the internal combustion engine (7). A volume of the chemical reducing agent or a precursor of the reducing agent is supplied to the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine. A calculation parameter is determined for an ammonia-volume depending on filter characteristics of the SCR-catalyst. The ammonia-volume is stored in the SCR-catalyst.
