The device (1) has an optical measuring system (20) with an optical marker (24) or active signal source (25) attached to a holder and an optical receiver (21) attached to another holder for receiving optical signals. Measurement results of a movement component are generated by position changes of the marker or source. A synchronization unit synchronizes an ultrasonic measuring system (10) with synchronization signals. A processing unit combines measurement results to a resulting measurement result that forms motion sequence of the lower jaw relative to the upper jaw.
