<p>Fibers and binder are gathered to make a blank with non-uniform layer thickness, ready for pressing to shape in a mold. In the novel process they are first introduced into a dished molding mask. This has the desired contour of the molding, at least on one side. Then the filled molding mask is introduced into the pressing mold, which matches it. There the blank is pressed to form the molding. The mask is introduced into the pressing mold automatically, preferably using a robotic manipulator. Numbers of molded masks first undergo proportionate filling. As each filling is completed, the filled mask is introduced in sequence, into the pressing mold. To make moldings of differing shapes, varied molding masks are held available for use. Before filling, a removable collar is placed around the sides of each mask. This provides external side support for the fibers and binder. Before pressing, the collar is removed. The molding mask is perforated. Fibers and binder are drawn through the holes onto the wall of the molding mask. Fibers and binder are introduced non-uniformly over the base surface of the molding mask. The material is intentionally heaped-up locally, as a function of the shape of molding to be produced. Similarly, the distribution over the volume of the molding mask is non-uniform. The composition is varied locally, in accordance with the function of the molding to be produced. The equipment used comprises a pressing mold and matching molding masks which can be laid individually into it. Outside the pressing mold, equipment fills the mask with fibers and binder. Further equipment introduces the filled mask into the pressing mold. The filling unit is designed with the ability to cause local variation in material composition.
