The device (2) has a variable vehicle roof comprising a movable roof element (5), which is movable between two positions (39). The roof element is horizontally arranged in one of the positions above a passenger compartment at the vehicle roof of a vehicle (1) e.g. cabriolet. The roof element is laid down in the other position with the vehicle roof in a storage room in the vehicle.
