Sheet-like products, for improving surfaces and/or for laminating, are produced by applying an aqueous preparation of a hardenable intermediate polymerizate of diallyl phthalate to an appropriate carrier or base and then removing the aqueous medium. The aqueous preparation may be a suspension of the polymerizate obtained by emulsifying a solution thereof in organic solvents in water, and driving out the solvent, or by emulsive polymerization of the monomer in the presence of carbon tetrachloride or of some other chain-transferring agent which inhibits undesirable cross-linking and gelation in water. A suspending and/or emulsifying agent, preferably a high molecular weight watersoluble or swellable substance, is added to the aqueous preparation. The aqueous preparation may contain a formaldehyde condensation resin in its aqueous phase, preferably an aminoplast resin, possibly modified with an aliphatic saturated or unsaturated alcohol. The carrier or base may be water-absorbent and the quantity of formaldehyde condensation resin may be appropriately controlled for the product of the method, after removal of the liquid medium, to contain 2 to 50, preferably between 10 and 33% by weight of the formaldehyde condensation resin, related to the weight of the untreated carrier or base. The liquid may be applied repeatedly to the water-absorbent carrier or base, the proportion of hardenable intermediate polymerizate to the formaldehyde condensation resin in the liquid being kept constant. Emulsifying or suspending agents specified are polyacrylic acid and its derivatives, e.g. polyacrylamide, polyalkylene oxides, e.g. polyoxyethylene ether or polyoxyethylene and polyoxypropylene graft polymers, polyvinyl alcohol, partly saponified polyvinyl acetate, and cellulose derivatives, e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose. Bases which do not accept water which are specified are metal and glass plates.
