[Also in Group VIII] The crushing rolls of a hay-conditioning machine comprise a plurality of sections of moulded fibre-impregnated elastomer material keyed to a shaft and means for compacting them axially in end-to-end relationship, each section having a length at least equal to twice its diameter. As shown, the lower roll 8 is smaller in diameter than the roll 12 above and is supported by bearings 9, 10 in a frame 2 of the machine in close proximity to the ground, the upper roll 12 being capable of being loaded against the lower roll 8 through mechanism 39. The roll 8 as shown consists of a number of cylindrical sections 14, 15 which are pressed together and secured on a square-sectioned shaft 7 with end caps 21 and pins 22, while the roll 12 consists of four frusto-conical sections 25, 28 which are similarly mounted on a shaft 32 between end caps 30 and are so tapered as to cause tapered gaps 38 to appear between the outer ends of the two rolls when these are in contact. The end caps of the two rolls press the sections axially together to an extent sufficient to eliminate the parting lines between adjacent sections. The roll sections have circumferentially-shaped helical grooves 35 spaced at 90 degrees. Further, instead of using a crowned roll in conjunction with a cylindrical roll as shown, both rolls may be of crowned formation. |
