<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an acrylic fiber having a higher orientation and more excellent strength as compared with an acrylic fiber made by conventional methods. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The sea-island conjugate fiber comprises a polyacrylonitrile-based polymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 300,000-4,000,000 as an island component and an ester-based polymer or a vinyl alcohol-based polymer as a sea component. The diameter of the island component is in a range of 2-300 μm and the island component is substantially continuous. The weight ratio of the island component to the sea component is preferably 10/90 to 80/20. The method for producing a fiber composed of a polyacrylonitrile-based polymer includes decomposing and eluting the sea component composed of the ester-based polymer or the vinyl alcohol-based polymer with an alkali solution from the fiber and drawing the obtained fiber two or more times.
