<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for melting an alloy ingot having little segregation of alloy compositions without lowering production speed in the melting method for metal by using a vacuum arc melting furnace. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The vacuum arc melting method for metal comprises forming the ingot in a casting mold by generating the arc between a consumable electrode and a mold to melt the consumable electrode, wherein the melting operation while making helium gas flow into the space between the ingot produced in the mold and the mold is performed.
