<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator system capable of performing a stable operation by sufficient traction by increasing the number of driving sheaves to impart driving force in the length direction to a rope for hanging and supporting. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In this elevator system performing N:1 (N is an integer of ≥4) roping, a balance weight 12 has the first driving sheave 20 and second driving sheave 21 to be commonly rotated and driven by a motor 20M provided in the balance weight 12. In the first driving sheave 20 and the second driving sheave 21, the sheave diameters are set to a 3:1 relation. A rope 17 passing through a return wheel 24 for relay is successively wound on the first driving sheave 20, a return wheel 23 for the balance weight 12 and the second driving sheave 21.
