PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the alignment property of sheets discharged from a sheet feeder by suppressing disturbance in the discharge attributable to abnormal shape of the sheets fed into the sheet feeder. SOLUTION: A sheet feeder comprises a paper feed unit A1 for feeding sheets in an image reader 100, a discharge unit A2 for discharging the sheets from the image reader 100, a light emission/reception unit 4 for detecting any abnormality of the shape of the sheets to be fed in the image reader 100 by the paper feed unit A1, a speed control unit 21 for controlling the sheet discharging speed based on the result of detection of abnormality in the shape by the light emission/reception unit 4.
