The method involves bringing an object e.g. unwinding axle, in contact with a device, where the device is designed as an unwinder (101). A distance of two movable retaining devices is determined during engagement, and the object is held by the retaining devices that are designed as tapered arms (103) of the unwinder or a rewinder. A momentary distance (112) of the retaining devices is monitored, and movement of the retaining devices is prevented when the momentary distance of the retaining devices varies from the distance greater than a predetermined threshold value.
