PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of performing subject's face detection in a short time. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: a photographic lens group 1; an imaging device 5 imaging a subject through the photographic lens group 1; a face detection part 31 performing face detection from a photographic image obtained from the imaging device 5; a focus detector 6 having a plurality of range-finding areas so as to perform range-finding of the subject; and a system controller 50. The system controller 50 calculates the closest distance and the farthest distance of the subject from range-finding information of each of the range-finding areas obtained from the focus detector 6, and performs the face detection while moving a focal position of the photographic lens group 1 in a face detection range from the closest distance to the farthest distance.
