PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline battery capable of suppressing gas generation on the inside in no discharge and over discharge, preventing the generation of short circuit, and having high discharge characteristics. SOLUTION: The alkaline battery includes a positive electrode, a gelatinous negative electrode containing zinc alloy powder, a separator, and an electrolyte made of an alkaline aqueous solution, and the zinc alloy powder contains 50-125 ppm of Bi, 100-2000 ppm of Al, and 1-50 ppm in total of at least one of Ca and Mg, and an air permeability of 5-25 cm<SP>3</SP>/cm<SP>2</SP>sec.
