PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera reducing time required for focusing control while suppressing power consumption. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus 16 includes an imaging surface that catches a field through a focusing lens 12, and repeatedly forms field images. A focus evaluation circuit 26 supplies a CPU 30 with high frequency components of the field images formed by the imaging apparatus 16, as AF evaluation values. The CPU 30 intermittently discriminates directions in which focusing points exist, based on the AF evaluation values provided from the focus evaluation circuit 26. The CPU 30 further restricts direction discrimination processing in response to the operation of a shutter button 28s. The CPU 30 then changes the focusing lens 12 in the direction discriminated by direction discrimination processing to search the focusing points.
