PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focal position detector or the like for accurately controlling the exposure of the light receiving element while suppressing increase in scale of the electronic circuit. SOLUTION: This focal position detector includes a plurality of range sensor pairs including a first range sensor pair (C115 and C125) and a second range sensor pair (C111 and C121), and a first monitor sensor D10 disposed at a position corresponding to one range sensor C115 of the first range sensor pair. The exposure time of the light receiving element in the first range sensor pair is controlled based on an output value of the first monitor sensor. The exposure time (especially exposure time of the first exposure operation) of the light receiving element in the second range sensor pair is controlled based on the output value of the first monitor sensor. The exposure time of the (m+1)-th exposure operation in the light receiving element of the second range sensor pair may be controlled based on the output value of the light receiving element in the second range sensor pair in the m-th exposure operation.
