<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of reliably separating paper sheets from each other irrespective of the kind of papers, and preventing any damage of paper sheets. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A paper feeder 1A comprises a paper sheet loading stand 2 with paper sheets P being loaded thereon, a sucking and conveying mechanism 3 for sucking and conveying the paper sheets P loaded on the paper sheet loading stand 2, a separation projection 5A which is displaceable in the projecting and accommodating direction with respect to a suction surface 30b, and projected from the suction surface 30b to separate a highest paper sheet from second and subsequent paper sheets when two or more paper sheets P are sucked by the suction surface 30b, and a solenoid 52 which displaces the separation projection 5A to the separation position for projecting the projection from the suction surface 30b and the accommodation position for accommodating the projection to the suction surface 30b side.
