<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make thickness of a crushing layer controllable at a prescribed value even if operating conditions are changed in a vertical mill. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a vertical mill for crushing a solid matter by pressurizing a pressure roller 9 to a rotating crushing table 5, air is blown off to the outer circumference of the crushing layer 25 formed by crushing on the crushing table 5, thereby controlling the thickness of the crushing layer by pneumatic pressure.
