<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control system and method, reducing the amount of hydrocarbon, ammonia, or the like in exhaust gas downstream of an exhaust emission control device by promoting gasification of the droplet of fuel or a reducing agent directly injected into an exhaust pipe before an exhaust brake device and efficiently consuming the directly injected fuel or reducing agent by the exhaust emission control device, in the exhaust emission control system including a direct injection device directly injecting the fuel or reducing agent into the exhaust pipe, the exhaust brake device, and the exhaust emission control device. <P>SOLUTION: This exhaust emission control system 1 includes the direct injection device 19 directly injecting the fuel or reducing agent into the exhaust pipe, the exhaust brake device 17, and the exhaust emission control device 18, which are arranged in order from an upstream side in the exhaust passage 16 of an internal combustion engine 10.
