<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform dust correction without requiring a line buffer, even when an image sensor of a configuration arranging in series a plurality of sensors such as a close range type image sensor or the like is used for a read optical system. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An apparatus has: an image reading means for reading a manuscript image by a plurality of image sensors lined up in series to output a read pixel signal corresponding to one line in a main scanning direction in parallel while being divided into N pieces; a dust detecting means for detecting whether dust or contamination is present on a manuscript table glass or a white plate based on the pixel signal output from the image reading means; a valid pixel holding means for holding valid pixels around a dust position detected by the dust detecting means for N portions; and a correcting means for using the valid pixels held by the valid pixel holding means and the valid pixels around the dust position under reading to correct an error with a read pixel due to dust or contamination.
