<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an unavailable scanning due to fail in setting an original document on an original platen or a misoperation in an image reader for reading the image of an original document which is placed on the original platen and forming image data. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reader has a sensor for sensing whether an original platen cover is opened or closed. When the start of a reading operation is instructed, the image reader checks whether a continuation time of the closed state and opened state of the original platen cover is within a predetermined range. Thus, when the possibility is high that an original document is not set, the image reader executes reading operation, only when the start of a rereading operation is instructed.
