<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element that is driven at a low voltage without corrosion of electrodes, and has excellent stability in repeated driving and an excellent black color tone. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The display element contains an electrolyte composition containing an organic solvent, a metal salt compound, and compounds expressed by general formula 1 and by general formula (G1):Rg<SB>11</SB>-S-Rg<SB>12</SB>, between a pair of counter electrodes, and displays black and white colors by applying a voltage, wherein the molar ratio (general formula 1/general formula (G1)) of the compound expressed by general formula 1 to the compound expressed by general formula (G1) is ≥10% and ≤50%.
