A denotable composition has incorporated therein an emulsion of a liquid or meltable hydrocarbon in a liquid or meltable organic explosive. The emulsifying agent may be a long chain fatty acid, alcohol, ester, amine, or amide, several of which are specified. In examples the hydrocarbon is paraffin oil, diesel oil, or engine oil, the organic explosive is a mixture of nitroglycerine and nitroglycol, nitroglycol alone, or T.N.T., and the emulsifying agent is oleic acid, stearic acid anilide, or lanolin. Other ingredients of the emulsions are collodion wool as an emulsion stabilizer, and dinitrotoluene. The detonatable compositions comprise the emulsions mixed with an inorganic chlorate, perchlorate, or nitrate (e.g. ammonium nitrate) and in examples also contain sodium nitrate, sawdust, and red iron oxide. |
