<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up time for detection of position and density of a visible image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A visible image detection device (1+11) comprises: a detection member (1) having a light-emitting member (2) and a light-receiving member (6) for outputting detection signals (i1 and i2) according to detected light (4) received; a position detection means (27) for detecting the position of a visible image (Tn1) for detecting position and density on the surface of an image holder (B) by determining whether or not the detection signals (i1 and i2) are the detection signals (i1 and i2) of the visible image for detecting position and density (Tn1) based on the detection signals (i1 and i2) and a threshold value (V0); and a density detection means (47+53+64) for detecting the density of the visible image (Tn1) for detecting position and density based on an extremal value (V7) of an output value based on the detection signals (i1 and i2) according to the density of the visible image (Tn1) for detecting position and density within a density determination period (ta) when the detection signals (i1 and i2) of the visible image (Tn1) for detecting position and density are output.
