PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that suppresses waste of ink due to idle discharge, thereby decreasing running cost. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus that discharges ink from a plurality of recording heads to form an image, image data to be formed is divided into portions corresponding to the nozzles of the plurality of recording heads, the drop size of discharged ink for each nozzle is calculated, the number of drops for each of the counted drop sizes is calculated, an amount of ink discharged from each nozzle is calculated based on the volume of one drop of each drop size set in advance and the number of drops for each of the counted drop sizes, an appropriate drop size is selected from the counted drop sizes based on the measured amount of ink discharged and a threshold set in advance according to the amount of ink discharged, idle discharge data for controlling the idle discharge from the recording heads is prepared based on the selected drop sizes, and idle discharge from each of the recording heads is controlled based on idle discharge data.
