PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ferritic stainless steel for the heat pipe of a high temperature waste heat recovery device. SOLUTION: The ferritic stainless steel has a composition comprising, by mass, 16 to 32% Cr, ≤0.03% C, ≤0.03% N, ≤3% Si, ≤2% Mn, ≤0.008% S and 0 to 0.3% Al, further comprising one or more selected from ≤0.7% Nb, ≤0.3% Ti, ≤0.5% Zr and ≤1% V, if required, further comprising one or more selected from ≤3% Mo, ≤3% W, ≤3% Cu, ≤0.1% Y, ≤0.1% REM (rare earth elements) and ≤0.01% Ca, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and at least satisfies inequality; Cr+3(Mo+Cu)≥20, inequality; Cr+3(Si+Mn+Al-Ti)≥20 and inequality; 0.037ä(C+N)/(V+Ti+0.5Nb+0.5Zr)}+0.001≤0.01.
