PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cutting tool having a coat film containing both VN characteristics and TiAlN characteristics, and excellent in wear resistance in particular. SOLUTION: The surface-coated cutting tool includes a base material and the coat film formed on the base material. The coat film comprises two or more A layers made of VN and two or more B layers made of Ti<SB>1-x</SB>Al<SB>x</SB>N (wherein x refers to 0.3≤x≤0.7), which are alternately laminated, respectively. The thickness λa of the A layer and the thickness λb of the B layer are 2 to 1,000 nm, respectively. The thickness ratio λa/λb of the A layer to the B layer increases from the base material toward the top surface of the coat film. In addition, the thickness ratio λa/λb of the A layer to the B layer nearest to the base material is 0.1 to 0.7, and the thickness ratio λa/λb nearest to the top surface is 1.5 to 10.
