<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor device wherein it is possible to suppress increase in area and consumption current and arbitrarily produce positive potential and negative potential. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The semiconductor device includes: a first capacitor to one end of which a pulse signal is inputted; a switch transistor one end of which is connected to the other end of the first capacitor and which outputs output potential from the other end; and a first control circuit that can be switched between negative potential output mode and positive potential output mode by a switching signal. The first control circuit performs the following operations on a mode-by-mode basis: in the negative potential output mode, it performs step-down operation and brings the potential of the other end of the first capacitor to negative potential and turns on the switch transistor to output negative potential each time the pulse signal falls; and in the positive potential output mode, it performs step-up operation and brings the potential of the other end of the first capacitor to positive potential and turns on the switch transistor to output positive potential each time the pulse signal rises.
