<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which does not require the use of a key for performing authentication operation in a device body and which need not use a remote control device for the authentication operation. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An operation knob 4a for opening/closing a lens cover 4 is exposed from a slit 5 formed on an upper surface 2t of a housing 2, so that it can move the lens cover 4 along the slit 5. Divisions where numbers "0" to "9" are inscribed are put along in a longitudinal direction of the slit 5, that is, in the moving direction of the lens cover 4, on the upper surface 2t of the housing 2. By repeating the operation for setting an indication mark placed on the operation knob 4a at a desired number (division) by moving the lens cover 4, and stopping it at that position for a predetermined time or longer by two or more number of times, a user can enter identification number made up of two or more digits.
