<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device which efficiently implements processing such as fingerprint detection when a multi-layer optical disk is distributed with conventional single-layer and double-layer optical disks. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The optical disk device has a disk determining section 109 which determines whether a loaded optical disk 100 is a first optical disk which has information recording layers less in number than a set value T (where T is an integer greater than 2) or a second optical disk which has information recording layers equal to or more in number than the set value T. The content of processing before recording/reproducing (for example, whether to perform fingerprint detection) are changed depending on whether the first optical disk or the second optical disk is loaded.
