The element (10) has an electro-chemical measuring cell e.g. electro-chemical pump cell, formed from a ceramic substrate and inner and outer pump electrodes (14a, 14b) applied on the ceramic substrate. The electrodes of the electro-chemical measuring cell stay in contact with gas atmosphere of fluid-conductive internal gas areas (15, 17) that are connected with each other. One of the electrodes of the electro-chemical measuring cell is connected, so that electro-chemical decomposition of a gas component i.e. nitrogen oxide content, to be determined takes place during operation. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining gas components in exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, using a sensor element.
