The method involves increasing flow rate of soot contained gases (3) by blocking a part of boiler tubes (4-9) such that the formation of soot deposits is controlled or already formed deposits are partly cleared away and transported from a waste heat boiler i.e. synthesis gas cooler (S). The boiler tubes are blocked by shutoff devices (AV1-AV6) that are provided with an adjustment drive. The shutoff device is closed from a safe control place in remote controlled manner. The shutoff devices are switched automatically depending on process parameters. An independent claim is also included for a device for prevention or delimitation of soot deposits in boiler tubes of a waste heat boiler, comprising shutoff devices.
