PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fusion splicer and a connection control method for the fusion splicer capable of fusion-splicing optical fibers without causing a connection defect regardless of a clad diameter. SOLUTION: The fusion splicer 1 and the connection control method for the fusion splicer are provided for fusion-connecting the optical fibers arranged facing each other, by arc discharge. The fusion splicer 1 includes a drive mechanism 2 adjusting the end face space of the optical fibers F arranged facing each other, and a driving control part 15 controlling the drive mechanism in fusion splicing to adjust the end face space variably according to the clad diameter of the optical fibers.
