PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and forming machine for deforming a hollow workpiece having at least one open end. SOLUTION: The workpiece 3 is clamped down in a clamping device 2, and at least one forming tool 6 is placed into contact with the wall surface of the workpiece. The workpiece and the forming tool are rotated relative to each other about an axis 5 and the workpiece is deformed with the forming tool. During at least part of deforming operation, the deforming tool is moved back and forth at a rotation frequency which is substantially equal to or a multiple of that frequency of the deformed part or the part to be deformed of the workpiece.
