摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for predicting a thickness variation in a steel material, which precisely predicts the thickness variation in the steel material to be used in the atmospheric environment, and also to provide a method for selecting a steel material, which selects the optimal structural steel material. SOLUTION: The method for predicting the thickness variation in the steel material, which predicts the thickness variation in the steel material in the atmospheric environment, employs following thickness variation predicting equation: Y=AX<SP>B</SP>(wherein, Y: thickness variation in the steel material, X: elapsed years). Above symbols A and B are respectively expressed by functions using an environmental factor as a parameter. Above symbols A and B are respectively independent functions. The method for selecting the steel material, which employs the above thickness variation predicting equation, is characterized by determining whether the steel material can be used in the atmospheric environment, based on the thickness variation in the steel material predicted by using the thickness variation predicting equation.
