<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of measuring a gear, reducing the size of a machine by reducing the amount of movement of a measuring element to reduce a movement range of the measuring element during the measurement. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method of measuring a gear for measuring a gear shape by synchronizing and controlling the movement of the measuring element 16a and the rotation of a workpiece W and rectilinearly moving the measuring element 16a in a contact state with a right gear surface WR or a left gear surface WL of the workpiece W in response to the rotation of the work W, a tangential line L in contact with a contact point A with rotational arrangement at a prescribed rotational angle α from a contact point Ao on a base circle Wb of the workpiece W to one direction and a tangential line L' in contact with a contact point A' with rotational arrangement at the prescribed rotational angle α from the contact point Ao on the base circle Wb of the workpiece W to the other direction are set. The measuring element 16a is moved along the tangential line L upon the measurement of the right gear surface WR, and the measuring element 16a is moved along the tangential line L' upon the measurement of the left gear surface WL.
