PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens that is compact and has high optical performance. SOLUTION: The zoom lens ZL includes, in order from an object side along an optical axis: a first lens group G1 of negative refractive power; a second lens group G2 of positive refractive power; and a third lens group G3 of positive refractive power. When zooming from the wide-angle end to the tele-photo end, the interval between the first and second lens groups G1 and G2 and the interval between the second and third lens groups G2 and G3 change. In the zoom lens ZL, if the focal length of the zoom lens ZL at the wide angle end is fw, the interval on the optical axis between the second and third lens groups G2 and G3 at the wide angle end is Dw23, the focal length of the zoom lens ZL at the tele-photo end is ft, and the entire length of the zoom lens ZL at the wide angle end is TLw, a condition expressed by 2.4<(ft<SP>2</SP>×Dw23)/(fw<SP>2</SP>×TLw)<4.0 is satisfied.
