<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and image forming apparatus with the same for shortening a read starting time when reading a document by preventing temperature elevation without increasing power consumption in the image reader that uses a cold cathode tube. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reader intermittently applies high voltage drive pulses to a cold cathode tube during a standby period (b) and repeats lighting-on and lighting-off. Thus, a temperature of the cold cathode tube during the standby state can be maintained at 30°C to 40°C, the time required for the cold cathode tube to reach the temperature 50°C to 60°C, at which the optimum quantity of light is emitted, can be shortened after copy starting key is ON, and power consumption or heat generation during the standby state can be suppressed.
