A wheelchair 10 comprises a pair of ground engaging members, e.g. wheels 14(a,b), a manually operable propulsion apparatus, e.g, handles 18(a,b), which is operable by a user other than the occupant of the wheelchair 10, and a power-assistance device for aiding propulsion of the wheelchair 10, wherein the power-assistance device includes a measuring device, e.g. load cells 24(a,b), for measuring force applied to the propulsion apparatus, and a motive device, e.g. motors 26(a,b) for providing drive to the wheels 14(a,b), wherein the drive provided to the wheels by the motors is proportional to the force applied manually to the propulsion apparatus (18a, 18b). A controller 28 is disclosed that may be used to provide drive signals which are proportional to the measured forces applied to the handgrips on the handles of the wheelchair. At least one deadman safety handle may be provided with drive of the motors being prevented unless the safety handle is operated. |
