Branched-chain higher hydrocarbons are obtained from propylene by polymerizing to a product containing 6 to 15 carbon atoms followed by subjecting this product to hydroisomerization (as described in Specification 878,035) in the presence of an acidic isomerization catalyst containing one or more sulphides, selenides, tellurides, arsenides and/or antimonides of metals of Group VIa or VIII of the Periodic System. The polymerization is effected conventionally using sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid (preferably supported) or a heteropoly acid (preferably supported), e.g. phosphotungstic or silicotungstic acid. The polymer may be distilled to separate trimers and/or tetramers for further treatment, which is effected at 100-500 DEG C., 10-100 atmospheres and 0.5-20 v./v./hr. The polymer is isomerized, partially or totally hydrogenated and partially cracked and may be subsequently fully hydrogenated if necessary. The isomerisation catalyst may be silica-alumina, silica-zirconia, boria-alumina, magnesia-silica, or alumina-halogen and preferably carries nickel and/or cobalt sulphide.
