In a device for producing an electric signal representing a predetermined arbitrary function of a physical displacement the displacement is applied to a sensing head 513, Fig. 1, which scans a continuously rotating cylinder 1 bearing marks 529 representing the predetermined arbitrary function, and a counter 543 counts these marks either positively or negatively between the sensing of a reference mark 503 by a reference head 527 and its sensing by the displaced head. The counter then indicates the desired predetermined arbitrary function of the displacement input. The sensing of the reference mark by the reference head resets the counter and turns a flip-flop 539 on to open gates 541 to the marks 529 and the sensing of the graph 5 turns flip-flop 539 off and closes the gate 41. In the preferred embodiment sensing is effected photo-electrically but it is stated that it could be magnet, inductive or capacitive. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a disc is used in place of the cylinder.</p> |
