948,021. Coating webs and strips. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND-SILBER SCHEIDEANSTALT. March 24,1961 [March 25, 1960], No.10941/61. Heading D1L. A process for coating one side of webs or strips 1 of metal or heat-resistant textile material comprises passing the heated web in a non- horizontal path through a fluidized bed of powdered, thermoplastic material 5. The web 1 may be metal, which may be pretreated by a phosphating, chromating or pickling process to promote adhesion, or a woven or knitted fabric or a fleece, e.g. of glass or asbestos fibres. The web, which is preheated by infra red radiators, is fed by rollers 2, 2<1> to a chamber 3 containing the material 5 through which it passes in a preferably curved path, withdrawal rollers 4, 4<1> rotating faster than the rollers 2, 2<1> to maintain tension in the web. The chamber 3 has adjustable lateral scaling strips 6, which may be heated or cooled, and sealing chambers 7 which include means, e.g. a slotted nozzle, for blowing air or gas towards the apertures in the chamber 3. The coated web may be passed through a heating and then a cooling chamber. The web forms one wall of the chamber 3 and is thus coated on one surface only. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the web passes through the chamber 3 from side to side in a curved path with one lateral edge vertically above the other.
