A hypodermic syringe comprises a rigid ampoule 4 which is moved forwardly in the syringe on release of an operating spring 5 so that the forward end of the needle 2, which is mounted in a holder 3 in front of the ampoule, is projected from the syringe and the rear end 7 of the needle pierces the ampoule, the contents of the ampoule then being discharged through the needle by the forward displacement by the spring of a piston stopper 11 in the ampoule. The spring 5 is held in a compressed state on a rod 14 having at the rear a flange 13 engaged by flexible fins 6. A cover 15 on the rear of the syringe -is slidable forwardly on removal of a flexible split ring 16 so that projections 19 in the cover displace the fins outwardly to release the rod. The rod is then urged forwardly by the spring and engages the ampoule piston stopper 11 to operate the syringe. In an alternative construction, the forward end of the needle is protected by a bellows (Fig. 2, not shown) of rubber or synthetic plastic which is pierced by the needle as it is projected.
