Disclosed is a method for controlling the power consumption of a computer. The method uses a power management program to detect S42, S44 the identities of processes running on the computer which maintain it in a high power state in the absence of input activity. The program compares S46 the identity of the processes running on the computer with a set of identities of previously identified processes and causes S48 the computer to adopt a low power state S404 if the detected identities of all the processes, running on the computer are in the set of identified processes. The method may detect the identity of a process running on the computer by detecting the threads which have a flag set to require system resources and identifying the process which runs the thread. Also disclosed is a method for an administrator to set up the set of process identities, identified as maintaining the computer in a high power state. |
