A process for producing high calorific value fuel gas comprises cracking liquid hydrocarbons with oxygen by the submerged-flame process and passing the product at an elevated temperature over a catalyst containing at least one element or compound of a Group VI or VIII metal. The gaseous product from the submerged flame process may be cooled before and after passing over the catalyst, and at normal or increased pressures, e.g. 8 atmospheres gauge. The temperature of the catalyst may be from 60 DEG to 400 DEG C. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier and may be a fixed or fluidized bed, and is exemplified by oxides and/or sulphides of chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, iron group metals such as nickel or cobalt, or platinum metals such as palladium. Mixtures of the oxides and/or sulphides of Group VI metals with Group VIII metals may also be used. Suitable carriers are aluminium oxide, aluminiferrous clays, alumina cements, pumice, or silica gel, and may be of 2-50 mm. grain size for the fixed bed, and 0.01 to 10 mm. for the fluidized bed. Specification 827,438 is referred to.
