In a process for separating high boiling impurities, e.g., methane, argon and oxygen, from a mixture thereof with hydrogen and carbon monoxide comprising washing the gas mixture with liquid nitrogen in a rectification column and withdrawing a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen from the head of the column, the major part of the used wash liquid consisting mainly of nitrogen and carbon monoxide is withdrawn a few trays above the sump whilst the remainder of the wash liquid containing the whole of the higher boiling components is withdrawn from the sump; the so-withdrawn liquids being separately vaporized by heat exchange with incoming mixture and/or nitrogen. |
