[Also in Division B8] A spout forming and applying machine for cartons comprises a carton-supplying conveyer 21, Figs. 6, 7, a lift platform 29, a spout forming die 73, a spout transfer mechanism 86, a sealing anvil 104 and a carton-removing conveyer 116. A carton received on a platform 22 contacts a switch 23 to actuate a pneumatic cylinder 26 which powers a pusher 28 to move the carton on to the lift platform 29, this latter being caused to move upwards after a finger 30 on the pusher 28 has contacted a switch 31. The carton is gripped while ascending by grippers 36, 37, rollers 41 following tracks 42. The die 73 receives foil from a roll 61 and comprises members 74, 77 (Figs. 19, 20, not shown) which form a spout 6, Fig. 5. The transfer mechanism 86 gathers the spout while in the die, between spring fingers 96, 97, Fig. 13, and transfers it to the sealing anvil 104 where it is pushed by plunger 95 between gripper plates 109, 110 (Fig. 16, not shown) until base portion 7 of the spout lies against front face 104a (not shown) of the anvil. The spout is carried down by the sealing anvil into the carton and is heat-sealed to the appropriate part of the inside face thereof, Fig. 10. The heat-sealing is effected by suitably coating the outer surface of the spout at the time of forming the spout and employing a heating element 111 (not shown) on the anvil. The area of the carton to which the spout is applied may or may not be similarly coated. The cycle of movements is completed by the lowering of the lift platform 29 with consequent release of the carton by grippers 36, 37, the next carton moved by pusher 28 dispatching the former carton on to the conveyer 116. The die 73 transfer mechanism 86 and sealing anvil are actuated by a prime mover 54 via cam-shaft 51. A safety device 67 comprises a switch held open by the foil when on roller 64. Absence of the foil causes closure of the switch with consequent stoppage of the machine. A circuit diagram is also described. U.S.A. Specification 2,862,649 is referred to. |
