The invention comprises compounds of formula: CN-CCl2-CHR1-COOR where R is a C1-8 primary or secondary alkyl group and R1 is hydrogen or methyl. They are prepared by reacting chlorine with a compound of formula CNCH2 CHR1COOR, generally at 20-125 DEG C., and in the substantial absence of actinic light. The reaction medium is preferably saturated with hydrogen chloride. A metallic chloride, e.g. of zinc or aluminium, may be present. The products are pesticides and herbicides. Treatment of the compounds of the invention in which R1 is hydrogen with alkanols in the presence of two equivalents of a base gives a -alkoxy-b -cyanoacrylic esters, while treatment with excess H2SO4 and hydrolysis gives a mixture of chloromaleic and chlorofumaric acids.
