PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient and simple method for producing a vinyl aromatic compound. SOLUTION: The method for producing a vinyl aromatic compound from a vinyl zinc reagent and a halogenated aromatic compound uses a catalyst comprising at least one diphosphine selected from four types of diphosphines and a nickel compound. The catalyst comprising a diphosphine and a nickel compound includes, for example, dibromo[9, 9-dimethyl-4, 5-bis(diphenylphosphino)xanthene]nickel and dichloro[1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]nickel. The vinyl aromatic compound includes, for example, ethyl 4-vinylbenzoate, 1-vinylnaphthalene, 4-methoxystyrene, 4-vinyl-1, 1'-biphenyl, 4-vinylbenzophenone, acetic acid 4-vinylphenyl ester, and 4-(N, N-dimethylamino)styrene.
