A hinge comprises a first part 1 having therethrough a hole 3 of circular section, a second part 2 having a non-circular pin 4 extending into the hole, and a wedge device 5 located between the pin and the first part and adapted to be displaced relative to the pin by a screw connection 7 into frictional engagement with the first part, the wedge device being constituted by two or more independent wedges non-rotatably engaged with the pin and the screw connection being in contact with only the pin and the wedges so that it is not subjected to any frictional force when the hinge is in use. The screw connection may comprise a bolt 8, Figs. 1, 2, freely rotatable in the pin 4, and a threaded disc 9, the head of the bolt being countersunk in the end 12 of the part 2 which is of square section and is adapted to engage in a recess in a fitting fixed to a window frame or the like. Relative axial movement of the parts is prevented by a shoulder 16 in the hole 3. In a modification, Fig. 5, a screw 11 engaging a threaded hole in the pin 4 has a head 10 in contact with the wedges, and a circular ridge 18 on the part 2 engages in a correspondingly tapered groove 17 concentric with the hole 3. In a further modification a non-circular portion 13 of the disc 9 is formed as a truncated pyramid of square section opposed to the pin 4 and engaging corresponding portions of the wedges 5. |
