<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-treating agent for coated base paper with which light weight and highly glossy coated base paper is obtained, and the coated base paper obtained by using the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This surface-treating agent for the coated base paper contains a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing (A) at least one kind of a specific cationic monomer, (B) a specific anionic monomer, and (C) a crosslinking compound, and having a viscosity of 1 wt.% aqueous solution of 5 mPa s. The coated base paper is treated with the surface-treating agent at 0.01 to 3.00 g/m<SP>2</SP>per one side surface based on absolute dried weight, on at least one side of the paper consisting of pulp as a main component.
